With the high number of telemarketing calls in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the governmental agency tasked with defining various policies and regulations for wireless communication service providers in India, has regulated several laws regarding telemarketing calls. In 2007, the National Do Not Call (NDNC) was introduced to minimize the amount of unwanted telemarketing calls in India. With NDNC, people can register their number on the list, so that they will not receive and telemarketing calls or sms. Telemarketers are required to register with TRAI and use the NDNC list to know which numbers cannot be called for telemarketing purposes.According to βThe Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2013β telecom operators will be fined for Rs 5,000 for each verified-compliant against an unregistered telemarketer sending unsolicited SMSes or following other such modes of Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) to subscribers registered under DND.
